World's smallest book: 'Teeny Ted from Turnip Town', FIBbed by Robert Chaplin
The Nano-Imaging Facility is part of the Pacific Centre for Advanced Materials and Microstructures (PCAMM) and 4D Laboratories and provides investigators at SFU and the surrounding community with access to high resolution instruments for the nanoscopic characterization of materials. We welcome all new and old users. Contact Li Yang for more information.

News

May 10, 2012:  DB235 FESEM/FIB recovers service after re-tip. Nano-Imaging is capable to get both electron source and ion source of the DB235 replaced and tuned well by local technologists on campus.

Apr. 12,  2012: Tecnai G2 stops service for fixing. Hitachi 8000 works normally for TEM imaging.

Apr. 10, 2012: DB235 FESEM/FIB stops service for e-source replacement. Contact Dr. Li Yang for urgent test requests. She may help you to find a solution.

Jan 30, 2012: Tecnai up.

Nov. 23: Hitachi is back up! New water chiller pump. Meanwhile, Tecnai is still down as it needs a stage repair.

Nov. 18th The Gatan visitor was unable to fix the GIF. Parts are being sent to factory for a checkup.

Nov. 14, 2011: Gatan is coming tomorrow to fix the EELS spectrometer. Stay tuned.

Sept. 7, 2011  OK to start signing up. The new FEG tip is working, beam is stable and aligned. Apparently the STEM needed the summer off.

Aug 8, 11:30 am: SEM stage working again. Good to go.
Aug 8th, 2011: The Tecnai tip failed to restart emission. We will install a new tip likely within 2-3 weeks. Li is away to the Microscopy and Microanalysis Meeting this week. Back next week Aug. 5: The FIB source was replaced successfully and aligned but the SEM stage developed a problem late today. It is not working properly and will need repair before anyone can use the SEM. All scheduled time cancelled until further notice here.Tecnai G2  repair is on its way to recoverery: Cold start of the electron source is in progress. Stay tuned. The broken turbo pump that pumps out the sample loadlock as well as the column ion pump of Tecnai G2 were replaced successfully last week.

May 13, 2011: Tecnai down for repair of turbo pump.

May 22, 2010: Pt wire biprism installed, holograms being collected

March 2010: W probe added to SEM/FIB for sample probing and lift-out

March 15, 2009: SEM e-gun replaced and  system being realigned.

Feb. 2008: Au sputter coater for SEM specimen preparation installed and operational.

December 8, 2008: Tecnai G2 recovers its service to users after a compustage repair.

STEM  September 23, 2008: The imaging ability of the NanoImaging Facility has been much improved after camera upgradings:

On the Tecnai G2  STEM

  • The main CCD camera was upgraded to an Ultrascan 4000 (4096 x 4096 pixels/frame).
  • A cryo-holder is not available with low dose exposure protocols for beam sensitive samples.

On Hitachi 8000 STEM

  • The  multiscan CCD camera was moved to the Hitachi 8000, providing users with digital imaging as well as film.

Near-field Scanning Optical Microscope (NSOM) is open to users. The microscope fills the imaging gap between routine optical microscopy and SEMs.

April 9, 2007: Robert Chaplin used the SFU focussed gallium ion beam system to publish a nanoscale book entitled 'Teeny Ted from Turnip Town' by Malcolm Douglas Chaplin (ISBN-978-1-894897-17-4). For further details go to: http://www.robertchaplin.ca/pubs/teeny/.
